This repository is a prototype for an Index of Professional Resources mapped to the 2018 MAGIRT Core Competencies.
This project is an exploratory initiative focused on the potential for reviving the MAGIRT Education Committee to provide continuing education support for map and GIS librarians at all career stages. Our field is changing rapidly; this index is intended to be a resource for facilitating self-driven professional development, providing a centralized “knowledge hub” for both new professionals and seasoned experts.
Competencies are ranked based on Bishop & Larsen (2024), “Validating Current Core Competencies: A Survey of Map and Geographic Information Librarianship Practices.” We have labeled competencies with a mean importance score of 3.5 or higher as [Priority: High]. These areas represent the most critical service-oriented and foundational skills identified by practitioners who responded to the study’s survey.
Temporarily housed in the David Rumsey Map Center’s Repository.
This project is currently under development. As we identify areas lacking sufficient training materials, we will need volunteers to help develop new guides, webinars, and best practice documents.
If you are interested in joining the MAGIRT Education Committee or helping to fill a specific resource gap, please reach out to Kristina Larsen (kllarsen@stanford.edu).
We welcome suggestions for resources (tutorials, articles, videos, or tools) that align with any of the core competency subareas.
