Project Overview

This repository is a prototype for an Index of Professional Resources mapped to the 2018 MAGIRT Core Competencies.

This project is an exploratory initiative focused on the potential for reviving the MAGIRT Education Committee to provide continuing education support for map and GIS librarians at all career stages. Our field is changing rapidly; this index is intended to be a resource for facilitating self-driven professional development, providing a centralized “knowledge hub” for both new professionals and seasoned experts.

Roadmap & Methodology

  1. Step 1: Access – Identify and centralize authoritative resources from across the profession. Sources include:
    • Internal: MAGIRT and ALA / ACRL publications and webinars.
    • External: WAML Archive, UCGIS GIS&T Body of Knowledge (BoK), IFLA, the GLOW OER list, community-shared resources from the MAPS-L listserv, etc.
  2. Step 2: Gap Analysis – Identify areas where resources are missing, outdated, or inaccessible.
  3. Step 3: Develop New Resources - In collaboration with WAML and other active professional organizations, encourage the creation of new resources to address information gaps.

Prioritization

Competencies are ranked based on Bishop & Larsen (2024), “Validating Current Core Competencies: A Survey of Map and Geographic Information Librarianship Practices.” We have labeled competencies with a mean importance score of 3.5 or higher as [Priority: High]. These areas represent the most critical service-oriented and foundational skills identified by practitioners who responded to the study’s survey.

Get Involved

Volunteer

This project is currently under development. As we identify areas lacking sufficient training materials, we will need volunteers to help develop new guides, webinars, and best practice documents.

If you are interested in joining the MAGIRT Education Committee or helping to fill a specific resource gap, please reach out to Kristina Larsen (kllarsen@stanford.edu).

Suggest Additions

We welcome suggestions for resources (tutorials, articles, videos, or tools) that align with any of the core competency subareas.
